Our tours this week included many essential London sights:
Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament. Conveniently two red double decker buses are driving by in front of it (one of them not in service - of course). The only way this scene could be more London is if someone was walking by with an umbrella! We're going to try to get student tickets to go in and get a tour of Parliament before the end of the trip.
Westminster Abbey. Our group hasn't actually gone in for a tour yet, and since I've done the official walk-around relatively recently, I probably will save the £15 admission this trip. (That's half or more of a theater ticket! I'll sacrifice seeing Charles Dickens grave again to go see some shows!) That doesn't mean we haven't seen the church though - on Monday, some of us went to the Evensong 5p.m. service. An interesting mix of tourists and regular parishioners. The Westminster choir is on recess for the summer, so we had music by the St. Thomas singers, and the entire service was stunning. Everyone was seated facing the aisle rather than the altar, and the religious leaders sat at the very back of the church, facing the altar, which was interesting. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between Westminster (Anglican) and the Catholic church. (For what its worth, I think they stand up, kneel, and sit more often and at more random times than the Catholic church). They also read a passage from the Old Testament in addition to the New.
The London Eye. We walk by it seemingly every day, but this time we decided to do an O-H-I-O pic with it.
St. James Park - right between Buckingham Palace and the Queen's Horse Guards. Simply beautiful - like it is right out of a fairy tale book.
